SPAAMFAA National Conference & Muster Report
Tue. Sep 6th 2016

Quite a few ODHFS members traveled north to Middletown, NY for the SPAAMFAA National Conference & Muster held on August 10-13, 2016. A new record must have been set for the most antique fire apparatus ever at a muster, as the muster site was Andy & Avery Leider’s “Truck House”, a warehouse housing about 150 antique rigs!

In addition there were about another 100 that the attendees brought in for the day. On Thursday, the field trip to the Firemen’s Association State of New York Home & Museum was spectacular as this is one of the finest collections of early American Fire Apparatus that exists in the world today. A real highlight of the trip was an opportunity to view up close and personal the Alexandria, Va. hand pumper, “The Sun”. This has to be one of the most ornately decorated hand pumpers ever constructed and is the type of piece you could study for hours. It is truly magnificent!

Following the tour of the FASNY Museum in Hudson, NY, the tour then stopped in Kingston, NY for a trip through the Kingston Fire Museum. Again, spectacular early rigs were on display along with 2 nice motorized pieces, all housed in a beautiful vintage fire station.  On Friday, there was a tour to New York City and the 911 Memorial & Museum.

ODHFS rigs in attendance at the Middletown muster were Pete & Elizabeth Westís spectacular 1931 Buffalo and Tom & Debbie Hermanís 1929 White Salvage Corps rig. Tom could not resist posing his White in front of the FDNY Super pumper for a few shots!
