ODHFS Northern Region Update - February 2020
Sun. Feb 9th 2020

Hi folks,

I think 2020 is going to be a great year for ODHFS and our antique fire truck hobby.  I bet some trucks got some TLC with the recent warmer February weather.  As I try and do each month, here are some quick highlights and key dates to keep in mind for our Northern Region ODHFS team:

Some updates for our Northern Region:

New Members

I love announcing new members to the Northern Region and ODHFS!
A special welcome to…

  • James Carter, Jr.
  • James is in the Amissville area.  Welcome James!
  • Elliott Rubino - Elliott lives in Annandale and is retired from Fairfax County Fire and now plays a huge role with the Fairfax County fire museum at a county office building.  I had the opportunity to get a nice tour of the museum and it was quite impressive.  I hope Elliott will be able to share some of the highlights of the museum in the near future.  Welcome Elliott!

Calendar items:

March 7, 2020  - 10:00am – 1:00pm - Manassas Fire Department
Northern Region 2020 kick off, business meeting, tour of museum.  You should have received a save the date email with additional information.  Additional reminder will be coming out soon.

  • RSVP Required
  • We will be bringing in lunch and it would be very helpful to know how many people to expect.  Please RSVP with the number by Monday, March 2nd.  RSVP by hitting “Reply” and letting me know.  Please, do not hit reply all.
  • Also, a “lunch offering” will be taken at the Manassas meeting to help offset the cost of lunch to the Northern Region.  Sorry, no credit cards accepted – just your cash/check.
  • Auction: Another important way we fund Northern Region activity is through the annual auction at our kick off meetings.  Please bring an auction item that has a fire department theme to it (equipment, books, models, etc.). Don’t forget that additional cash for those auction items you bid on.
  • Bring a truck?   Several folks have asked if it is ok to bring your truck to the meeting.  Absolutely!  We verified that parking should not be an issue.  So, if you are somewhat local, weather cooperates, and you feel like giving your truck some March run time, feel free to bring the truck to the meeting.
  • Weather - I don’t want to jinx anything however if snow/ice becomes a problem, I will use email to communicate.  So if the slippery or white stuff is on the ground, check your email.  We are expecting nice weather!

March 29, 2020 - Mt. Airy, Maryland Fire Memorabilia & Equipment Sale – Carroll County, Maryland
The unofficial event that kind of kicks off the fire shows each year.  Flea market items.  Great time just hanging out with folks, and not too far from Virginia.

April 3-4, 2020 - ODHFS State wide meeting at the Keystone Tractor and Truck Museum in Colonial Heights, VA.  I encourage to attend, as I believe you will really like the museum.   Nice group of antique fire trucks on display as well.

May 1, 2020 - Apple Blossom in Winchester, VA.

IMPORTANT – this is just a quick and short list of some of the ODHFS activities.  Make sure you check out the ODHFS calendar at:  https://odhfs.org/calendar.html
Jack Sullivan does an awesome job on the ODHFS web page.  When you visit the calendar, check out the many other items found on the site.

SPAAMFAA

Are you a member?  If not, please consider it.  ODHFS is the Virginia Chapter of SPAAMFAA.  Membership includes good information via newsletters, magazine, etc.  ODHFS and SPAAMFAA go good together.

Congratulations to our ODHFS President Tom Herman who had his 1977 Mack CF from Chesterfield, VA featured on a recent back cover of SPAAMFAA’s Enjine! Enjine! magazine.

ODHFS Dues
Not so long ago you should have received notification to pay your 2020 Dues.  Please don’t forget!

I will wrap up this update with this…..
Please plan to attend our Northern Region meeting at the Manassas Volunteer Fire Company on March 7th.  At one time, Manassas ran an awesome 1977 Hahn/LTI 85’ as their Tower 1.  And Tower 1 is now owned by our own club member Mark Olsen.  The photo attached of Tower 1 was taken at Apple Blossom last year and was just one of numerous fire trucks old and new.  If you have not ever attended Apple Blossom, you are missing a great event.  Don’t miss it.

The “flagship” fire truck for many years of Apple Blossom has been Rocky Keplinger’s beautiful and unusual 1967 Ford C/Young open cab pumper.  The Young fire truck company made very few open cab Ford C fire trucks, and most of them served at stations in our general area.  Check out the Sara Zane Ford photo.  If that truck does not get you in the mood for Apple Blossom, we have problems.

Don’t forget about our “Owners Pride” web page that showcases our ODHFS members rigs.  I am the caretaker of that web page, and if your truck is not on there, that can cause me some stress.  Help me remove stress…..send me photos of your rig via email and let me add it to the numerous trucks included on the site.  www.odhfs.smugmug.com.

Look forward to seeing many of you at Manassas on March 7th
