Good evening all! I hope 2021 is starting out to be a better year for most of you as compared to 2020.
As I sit here writing to you all, I am saddened to the fact that more and more events keep getting cancelled for this year. Is 2021 just a continuation of 2020?Are we ever going to see the “norm” again? I just got off the phone with one of the people in charge of the MDA car show which is held at the Berglund Center here in Roanoke. Of course the phone call was to tell me the bad news. That the show would be cancelled for the first time since it began 35 years ago. I have had a booth at this car show for the last 20 years (selling diecast, signs, etc) and the ODHFS has had a display in this show as well for the last 8 years. This is a show that everyone looks forward to. It is the first show of the season. No matter the weather outside, it is comfortable inside. All indoors except for the huge flea market that is held outside on all 3 days, the first weekend in March.
So where do we stand with other ODHFS events so far this year. As of right now the Apple Blossom Festival which is put on by the Northern Region is still on. It is going to be a different format though this year. For those of you that have never been to it, it is really a nice event that ends with a fire apparatus parade, although It is going to be a little different this year with no parade at the end. It will just be a static event held at the Apple Blossom Mall in Winchester on Saturday, May 1. From 10-3. Of course this event is subject to change or even cancel which is beyond our control but let’s keep our fingers crossed.
As we move forward in 2021 let’s hope we can eventually get back to some type of normalcy. On a positive note, there are exciting things happening with the Va Fire Museum in Roanoke. The building has just had the roof repaired and will begin other renovations real soon. We are also working on a few other projects as well. More to come later.
We hope to have some type of muster in Roanoke this Summer but it all depends on how things go with the pandemic. For those that don’t know, the Va Fire Museum acquired the equipment that was in the trailer which was deteriorating rapidly. The decision was made to get rid of the trailer and everything inside before it totally collapses and we are stuck with a huge mess. We at the museum will have the same type of arrangement as ODHFS had. If there is anything you need from the trailer, come and get it with a donation made out to the museum. Hopefully we will have a bigger inventory at our warehouse than what was in the trailer to be able to help all the members. We are putting together a patch board of Va Fire Depts and Rescue Squads. If you would like to donate a patch please let me know. We would love to have it. I will post pics soon of the progress of the museum. Don’t forget to visit our Facebook page. Again, if there is anything you need or I can help you with please let me know.
