ODHFS Central Region Members:
Despite the threatening weather that kept about 1/2 of the registered vehicles away, we still had a good turnout at the Muster in Farmville on October 9, 2021. While it rained (on me) on the way there and on the way home, other than a very short sprinkle early in the day, the weather was was fine. We had 71 members and guests attend, 17 antique apparatus on display (including 3 that drafted) and 4 other displays. The lunch that was prepared by the members of the Virginia Fire Museum was well received. Thanks to Dan Pempel for his work spreading the word in the local schools, by getting signs put up along the highways, and information on the radio there were a large number of families with children that came out throughout the day to see the apparatus. A complete report with pictures will be in the upcoming Torchbearer.
Thanks to Tommy Herman and Coleman Goodman who accompanied me with their apparatus at Jim Hanifer's funeral service. The family was very appreciative.
The following are events that I have been made aware of. If you know of events that should be included, please let me know as soon as you become aware of them, not 30 minutes after I have sent out that month's new letter.
- December 4, 2021 Prince George County Christmas Parade 3 PM. Apparatus MUST be in line up no later than 2 PM at Prince George Police Department, 6600 Courthouse RD. This parade is limiting the total number of participants in the parade so if you desire to attend you MUST REGISTER With KENNY Williams NO LATER THAN SUNDAY NOV 7. - ODHFS Member Robert Morris needs someone with an apparatus to do a Santa Run on December 5 in King George County. He normally handles this but cannot this year. If you can assist him, please contact him ASAP at: pfdmorris@hotmail.com.
- December 7, 2021 Colonial Heights Christmas Parade 7:00PM. There is a limited number of ODHFS apparatus that will be allowed to participate in this event so if you desire to attend with an apparatus you must contact Tommy Herman.
- December 11, 2021 Powhatan Christmas Parade 2:00 PM. If you desire to attend with an apparatus, please contact me. I will send you the particulars when I get them.
- December 12 , 2021 Chester Christmas Parade 2 PM. ODHFS is registered for this. One of our apparatus will serve as Santa's Chariot and an unlimited additional antique apparatus can serve as escorts. Staging for ODHFS apparatus will be at 1 PM at the Kohls store beside Chesterfield Fire Station #14. Note: They shut down Rt 10 between Chester and Fire Station 14 shortly after 1 PM so if you are traveling to staging from the west, you need to be there before 1 PM or take another route.

ODHFS member Herb Delbridge and his “PURPLE HEART TRUCK” were on display at MISSION BBQ on March 29, 2022 to commemorate the National Vietnam War Veterans Day. Mr. Delbridge created this truck to honor all US War veterans.

On March 19, 2022, The Petersburg Fire Department held a commemoration Memorial Service for a LODD that they suffered exactly 40 years ago. Sgt. Mike Goff was killed in a building collapse during a multiple alarm fire.

President Tom Herman regrets to announce that ODHFS Central region member Jim Hanifer has passed away. Jim had been a member of ODHFS since 2012 and could be seen each July 4th Brandermill parade riding with one of us through the parade.

The ODHFS regrets to announce that Northern Region Member James Allison passed away on Wednesday, August 25th. Visitation will be Friday, September 3rd from 3-5pm and 7-9pm at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton, VA.
