ODHFS Central region Newsletter – March 2023

Share:

First, I always like to start my newsletter off by welcoming a new member. This month it’s Bill Donatti Sr from Powhatan. Bill’s been a long time member of the Fine Creek VFD in Powhatan County. Bill joined ODHFS while at the Virginia Fire Rescue Conference in Virginia Beach last week where ODHFS Eastern Region Director Wayne Black and several other members put on a great ODHFS display in the lobby of the Convention Center that included Wayne’s collection of antique hand tools and equipment; Mike Denbar’s Model T Chief’s car; the City of Virginia Beach’s first fire apparatus, a 1937 Seagrave Quad; and the Virginia Beach’s Monster Fire Truck (yes it was in the lobby).

I have more good news and some bad news. The good news is, the Central Region is NOT #1. The bad news is our region is #2 on the number of members who have not paid their 2023 dues. As of this morning, there are 23 of you who have not paid (if you don’t know who you are, standby for a personal email). You can either send your $15 check to ODHFS, P.O. Box 4196, Chester VA 23831 (Include a note on whose dues the check is for if you have lost the notice) OR you can renew on-line now (which does include a $1 processing fee). Please don’t be “that person” that I have to KEEP pestering.

Recently you should have received the electronic version of the March 2023 Old Dominion Torchbearer. If you did not get it, contact Richard Moss richard@mossrd.org to make sure he has your correct email address.

For those of you that have an antique apparatus, now is the time to start getting it ready for the parade and event season by changing fluids, checking the tires, checking the suspension, checking the drive shaft(s), etc. Last year I discovered the two bolts that hold the mid-support on the drive shaft on my 1952 Chevy/John Bean were very loose. Every two years I take my Bean to the mechanic that did most of the renovation work on it for him to double check the major safety items like brakes, tires, and steering.
