Any organization is only as strong as its members.
Since its formation in 1978, the Old Dominion Historical Fire Society has grown from a small group of friends with a passion for fire trucks into a strong voice in fire service history.
One thing, however, has never changed—our sense of family. Like the fire service itself, our purpose and membership have always been rooted in camaraderie and tradition.
The photo above captures those early days, taken in the late 1980s by Richmond Newspapers during a club cookout and workday. It reflects the spirit of our organization—a gathering of friends, working together with shared dedication. Sadly, nearly half of those pictured are no longer with us, but their contributions and legacy endure. Their names are honored below.
From the early days of covered dish dinners when funds were scarce to the tireless efforts of members’ parents, spouses, and children who helped make our musters a success, we owe a deep debt of gratitude to those who paved the way for where we stand today.
Today, we are proud to see the next generations—children and grandchildren of our founding members—joining our ranks and carrying on our mission.
The following Memorial Roster honors those who gave their time and energy, often behind the scenes, ensuring that our society continues to thrive.
May they never be forgotten.
(Special thanks to Wayne Kidd, Memorial Committee Chairman, for his dedication in gathering and maintaining this important record.)
