It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the passing of retired D.C.F.D. Assistant Fire Chief William FitzGerald, on March 13, 2025, whose legacy in the fire service is beyond words. Chief FitzGerald, whose journey with the department began on November 19, 1978, at Engine Company No. 12 on North Capitol Street, retired as the Assistant Fire Chief of Services on January 6, 2007. He was not just a dedicated professional; he was a cherished legend within the D.C.F.D., whose passion and love for the fire service were clearly evident throughout his illustrious career and into his retirement years.

As Assistant Chief of the District of Columbia Fire Department and Chief of the Chambersburg Fire Department, Chief FitzGerald’s dedication and leadership touched countless lives. His most recent service as Treasurer for the Gordonsville Volunteer Fire Company exemplifies his lifelong commitment to both the fire service and his community.

Chief FitzGerald was a friend, mentor, teacher, and the epitome of “a fireman’s fireman.” Humble and dedicated, he was always ready to serve. Never forgetting his roots, Chief FitzGerald always prioritized the well-being of his fellow firefighters and community above his own needs. His contributions to the fire service have left a lasting impact on all who had the honor to work alongside him.

Billy was a Life member of SPAAMFAA and a Member of CAFAA and ODHFS.

A memorial service was held for Chief FitzGerald at his private fire station at his home in Louisa, Va. on April 6, 2025. The following video clips were submitted by Tom Herman who attended the Memorial.
